NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Monday. Jeera prices had been on a losing streak for three straight sessions and hit an over six-month low amid rising supplies and weak export demand. Meanwhile, coriander prices rose on buying at lower levels.
The most-active June contract of JEERA fell 1% to INR 19,930 per 100 kilograms, as rising supply and weak exports weighed on prices. The contract extended losses for the third straight session and hit an over six-month low of INR 19,900 per 100 kg.
Jeeara arrivals increased 25% to 84,930 tonnes in April, as favourable weather conditions across northwest India allowed farmers to complete harvesting faster than expected.
The most active June contract of TURMERIC was down nearly 1% at INR 16,086 per 100 kg, as arrivals across key markets of Nizamabad, Erode, and Hingoli accelerated, creating a temporary supply glut. In April, turmeric arrivals surged 126% on year to 101,718 tonnes, SMC Global Securities said in a note.
"Increased arrivals of late-harvested, high-moisture turmeric have led to aggressive price discounting for average quality lots," Kedia Advisory said. SMC Global expects the contract to trade sideways with a weak bias, in the range of INR 15,830-INR 16,630 per 100 kg.
The most active June contract of CORIANDER was up nearly 1% at INR 12,624 per 100 kg, as traders bought more at lower levels. On Friday, the contract had hit a one-month low of INR 12,444 per 100 kg. Coriander is likely to attract buyers at lower levels as arrivals are down 31% on year at 40,828 tonnes in April, SMC Global said.
The following were the closing prices of the most active spices contracts on Monday:
Contract | Exchange | Unit (kg) | Price (INR) | Change (INR) |
Coriander June | NCDEX | 100 | 12,624 | 104 |
Jeera June | NCDEX | 100 | 19,930 | -215 |
Turmeric June | NCDEX | 100 | 16,086 | -140 |
