MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh fell as there was subdued demand at higher rates, traders said. Prices also fell in the key markets of Maharashtra as demand was sluggish, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg and demand was poor at higher prices, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Prices had increased by INR 80 per 100 kg after the release of the sales quota for May as it was considered to be insufficient. But prices fell as demand could not be sustained at those levels, Gupta added.

The government has set the all-India sugar sales quota for May at 2.25 million tonnes, 2.2% lower than the quota of 2.30 million tonnes for April and 4.3?low the 2.35 million tonnes allocated for May 2025. Market participants had expected a higher sales quota, Gupta said.

Sugar prices in Maharashtra also fell as demand was sluggish at high prices, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. After the government released the sales quota, prices rose significantly, he said. The government lowered the May sugar sales quota for Maharashtra by 18% from April to 666,331 tonnes.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 10-INR 15 at INR 4,020-INR 4,120 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 10-INR 15 at INR 4,030-INR 4,130 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 10 at INR 4,042-INR 4,122 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Down INR 10 at INR 3,915-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1807 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.6% at 14.78 cents per pound, tracking a rise in the price of crude oil on NYMEX. Higher crude oil prices increase the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, reducing the availability of sugar.  End
