NEW DELHI - The Centre will roll out the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), the new rural jobs scheme, across the country from Jul. 1. With VB-G RAM G coming into force, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 shall be repealed from the same date, according to a gazette notification.
Under the new framework, every rural household willing to undertake unskilled manual work is promised 125 days of employment,
higher than 100 days under the MGNREGA. The VB-G RAM G bill was passed in December to replace MGNREGA, and it was expected to be implemented in the financial year starting April.
The Union Budget has allocated a record INR 956.92 billion for implementing the scheme in 2026-27 (Apr-Mar). With the likely contributions from states, the total outlay is estimated to exceed INR 1.51 trillion. "This allocation is expected to provide fresh momentum to rural infrastructure development, large-scale employment generation, and enhancement of rural incomes," the Ministry of Rural Development said in a release.
The scheme is designed to be implemented as a centrally-sponsored scheme and operationalised by state governments, with a cost-sharing pattern of 60:40, 90:10 for north-eastern and Himalayan states, and 100% central funding for Union Territories without legislatures. End
