India, Canada conclude 2nd round of trade agreement talks; next round in Jul

NEW DELHI – India and Canada Friday concluded the second round of negotiations for the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, the commerce ministry said in a release. The two sides discussed a wide range of chapters, including goods and services trade, intellectual property, rules of origin, and technical barriers to trade, in the talks that began Monday.
"The negotiations witnessed constructive and productive engagement between the two sides," the ministry said. "India and Canada reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing a balanced, ambitious, and mutually beneficial agreement aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and economic ties."
Both sides agreed to continue negotiations in a "constructive and cooperative spirit". The next round of discussions is scheduled to be held in July in Ottawa, the Canadian capital, with inter-sessional engagements to continue meantime, the ministry said.
The negotiations between India and Canada had halted in September 2023 at a time when bilateral relations had broken down. As relations between India and Canada improved last year, the two sides began negotiations in December for a free trade agreement. In the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), India's trade with Canada totalled $8.7 billion, with exports worth $4.2 billion. End
