NEW DELHI – The cost of a home-cooked non-vegetarian meal and a vegetarian meal rose 2% on year each in April, according to CRISIL Intelligence. The price of vegetarian thali rose due to higher prices of tomato, vegetable oil, and cooking gas despite a fall in onion, potato, and pulses prices, CRISIL said in a report.
The cost of a non-vegetarian thali rose 1% on-month to INR 55.1 in April, driven by a 2% on year rise in broiler prices, which accounted for 50% of the cost. "This was on account of intense heat in summer, causing higher bird mortality than last year, squeezing supply," the report said.
Tomato prices rose 38% on year to INR 29 per kg in April amid declining output, while vegetable oil and LPG cylinders rose 7% on year each due to the ongoing global supply disruption.
In April, the price of a vegetarian meal was INR 26.7, unchanged from March. "Onion and potato prices dipped 4?ch, supporting the decline, while tomato prices rose 3%, restricting the decline," the report said. CRISIL calculates the average cost of preparing a thali based on prevailing input prices across north, south, east, and west India. End
