MUMBAI – The FAO All Rice Price Index averaged 102.1 points in April, up 1.9% on month but down 2.7% from a year ago. Indica and Aromatic prices drove the increase in the FAO All Rice Price Index in April, according to a report.

Export prices of Indica and fragrant rice rose across much of Asia in April, driven by increases in costs of harvesting, milling, packaging, and internal transport due to a surge in prices of crude oil and its derivatives, the report said. The increase was the sharpest in Vietnam, where prices were supported by demand from buyers in the Philippines, it said. Moreover, changes in the winter-spring harvest led to farmers producing relatively more Glutinous and Japonica rice, which curtailed the supply of Indica rice and, to a smaller extent, fragrant rice varieties, the organisation said.

The Indica rice index rose to 102.2 points in April from 100.2 points the previous month. The Aromatic rice price index rose to 104.0 points from 100.5 points.

India's Pusa Basmati variety fell to $1,050.0 per tonne in April from $1,075.0 the previous month. The average price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India fell to 327.5 per tonne in April from $329.4 per tonne in March and that of 5% broken non-basmati rice fell to $341.8 per tonne from $343.6, the release showed. The price of 5% parboiled rice from India was down at $346.2 a tonne compared to $349.5 per tonne in March.

Indian quotations proved the only exception to the rising trend, as new crop arrivals weighed on Indian Indica prices, along with disruptions to Gulf deliveries on Basmati quotations, the report said. Indian basmati exports as well as exports from other major suppliers to Gulf countries were subdued due to high ocean freight prices that constrained trade. Gulf consignments through ports outside the Strait of Hormuz also faced overland delivery costs, it said.

On the other hand, a slowdown in Calrose sales and harvest pressure in Vietnam depressed Japonica and Glutinous quotations by 1.8% and 3.9%, respectively. The Japonica rice price index fell to 96.4 points in April from 98.2 points the previous month. The Glutinous rice price index fell to 95.9 points in April from 99.8 in March, the report said.

"In the Americas, prices of US N2,4% moved little, as competition with MERCOSUR origins and ample inventories capped increases, even as uncertainties emerged over whether the full extent of planned sowing cuts for US long-grain rice were captured by the March planting intentions survey," the report said. In MERCOSUR origins, the undertone remained firm despite harvest progress, it said. MERCOSUR is a South American trade bloc.

Meanwhile, in Brazil, gains were influenced by the real's appreciation, which added to continued farmer reluctance to sell owing to unfavourable margins.

The price of Thailand's A1 Super rice variety rose to $382.7 a tonne in April from $368.5 per tonne in March, while that of Thailand's 25% broken variety rose to $399.3 per tonne from $378.5. The price of Vietnam's 25% broken rice rose to $351.4 a tonne in April from $333.0 per tonne in March. Pakistan's 5% broken rice rose to $353.9 a tonne from $350.6, while basmati rice rose to $1,142.3 per tonne last month from $1,072.6 per tonne in March.  End
