NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of most spices on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange fell on Thursday in the absence of a deal between the US and Iran, and due to higher arrivals in spot markets, Alok Pandey, analyst at SMC Global Securities said. Despite the ongoing negotiations, a formal, comprehensive deal, has not materialised between the US and Iran to end the West Asia war. While US President Donald Trump has stated that a deal is "very possible" following "very good talks" with Tehran, Iran has indicated that the US proposal is still under review.
At 1517 IST, the most active June contract of JEERA was down 0.5% at INR 20,485 per 100 kg due to a steady increase in fresh crop arrivals from key producing regions in Rajasthan, as per Kedia Advisory. Favourable weather conditions allowed farmers to accelerate harvesting, resulting in a supply spike rather than a staggered arrival pattern, it said in a note. Farmers are actively liquidating stocks to generate liquidity ahead of the Kharif sowing season, it said.
However, a steep fall in unlikely due to growing concerns about crop damage due to unseasonal rains, as well as the likelihood of a West Asia peace deal which will help jeera exporters send more shipments to those markets, Pandey said.
At 1517 IST, the most active June contract of TURMERIC was up 0.3% at INR 16,520 per 100 kg, supported by tight arrivals and quality concerns across key producing regions in Maharashtra and Telangana, as per Kedia Advisory. However, gains were capped as arrivals have recently increased in major mandis such as Nizamabad, Erode, and Hingoli, creating a temporary supply glut. The news of a West Asia peace deal may also boost sentiment, said Pandey.
At 1517 IST, the most active June contract of CORIANDER was down 0.9% at INR 12,930 per 100 kg as buying interest remained low amid prevailing higher prices, SMC Global said. However, fall is likely to be limited as underlying fundamentals remain supportive, driven by steady demand for inventory replenishment and relatively tigher supply conditions, it said.
