MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and rice showed mixed trends while prices of maize were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, fell further as market sentiment remained poor amid sluggish demand, they said. Prices of some varieties of rice fell in Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, because of muted export and domestic demand. Maize prices were unchanged as demand matched supply, they said.

Prices of WHEAT in Kota fell by INR 25 per 100 kilograms from Tuesday to INR 2,350-INR 2,375 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals rose by 65,000 bags to 100,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices declined for the third consecutive day as market sentiment in the state remained low, he said. "There has been very low demand this week, so prices are just falling every day," he said. Demand has been largely sluggish as most millers, stockists, and traders have ample supply of the grain, he said.

Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,600 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Though arrivals have declined slightly, demand is also low, keeping prices unchanged, he said. Arrivals of the staple grain are expected to fall steadily in the next few weeks as the peak arrival period of the rabi crop is over, he said. Arrivals of the staple grain typically peak in April and the first week of May, he said.

Prices are unlikely to be affected by the decline in arrivals as supply of the grain is expected to remain comfortable, Kochar said. "Once procurement starts winding down and eventually stops, the government will begin OMSS (open-market sales scheme) of wheat to keep prices in check," he said. While the ongoing procurement is still lagging on-year, the government has large carry-over stocks of the grain, he said. "There will be ample supply in the market, so prices won't go up even as arrivals decline," he said.

The price of wheat in Vashi was steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices are unchanged amid low market activity as many participants are away for various reasons. "Some people don't want to step out in this heat, while others are visiting their hometown as this is also when schoolchildren are on holiday," he said.

The price of MAIZE in Indore was steady at INR 2,100 per 100 kg, Kochar said. The price was steady as demand for the coarse grain is on a par with supply, he said. Prices are likely to be range-bound with a slight negative bias in the near term as arrivals from Bihar are expected to begin soon, he said. Bihar is among the top producers of the grain in the country.

Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,750-INR 1,920 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were unchanged at 1,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

Prices of RICE varieties showed mixed trends in Vashi, Vora said. The price of 1401 basmati rice fell by INR 200 per 100 kg from the previous day to INR 9,500-INR 9,600 per 100 kg, while that of the 1121 variety was unchanged at INR 10,000-INR 10,200 per 100 kg.

Prices of some varieties of basmati rice fell because of a decline in demand, Vora said. "Both domestic and export demand is down," he said. Last month, many exporters and stockists had stocked up on two to three months' worth of basmati rice in the hope that export conditions in West Asia would ease, he said. However, there has been no progress in peace talks between the US and Iran since, which is keeping sentiment low, he said. Countries in West Asia are the top destinations for Indian basmati rice exports.  End
