MUMBAI – Global central banks net sold 30 tonnes gold in March as sales from Turkey and Russia offset purchases elsewhere, the World Gold Council said in its monthly report. Net buying continued in countries that are regular buyers, with Poland, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and China being at the top, the council said.
The National Bank of Poland was the largest buyer in March as it purchased 11 tonnes of gold, followed by the Central Bank of Uzbekistan which bought nine tonnes and the National Bank of Kazakhstan which got six tonnes, the council said. The People's Bank of China continued buying gold for the seventeenth consecutive month, ramping up its monthly buying during March and adding five tonnes, it added. Guatemala and Czech Republic were also net buyers during the month, purchasing two tonnes gold each, according to the council.
Turkey was the largest net seller during March as it sold 60 tonnes gold, the council said. The country's central bank is utilising parts of its gold reserves for foreign exchange and liquidity purposes. Russia also sold six tonnes gold during the month, it added.
During the first three months of 2026, Poland remained the top buyer of gold at 31 tonnes, followed by Uzbekistan at 25 tonnes, Kazakhstan at 13 tonnes, and China at seven tonnes, the council said. Central banks of other countries such as Czech Republic, Malaysia, Guatemala, Kyrgyz Republic, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Serbia also made net purchases of one tonne or more each, it said.
The largest seller of gold during the first quarter of 2026 was Turkey, where official sector holdings fell 79 tonnes based on the available data, the council said. Most of these sales were made in March, with Turkey's central bank utilising an additional 80 tonnes via swaps, it said. End
