Maharashtra summer crop area dn 5% YoY at 480,631 ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area covered under summer crops in Maharashtra as of Monday was 480,631 hectares, down nearly 5% from 503,873 hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The acreage so far has surpassed the season's normal for the state, which is 444,109 hectares.
The acreage under summer paddy was down at 168,153 hectares from 171,136 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under jowar fell to 30,924 hectares from 35,024 hectares last year. Maize acreage rose to 97,495 hectares from 97,036 hectares, and that of bajra rose to 43,301 hectares from 40,441 hectares a year ago.
Moong acreage in the state was 16,707 hectares, down from 19,951 hectares last year, according to the report. The area sown under urad also fell to 1,520 hectares from 1,917 hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under all summer oilseeds so far was down at 118,854 hectares from 133,839 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Groundnut acreage slipped to 88,695 hectares from 98,676 hectares last year. The acreage under sesame fell to 25,709 hectares from 30,279 hectares a year ago.
Summer crops are grown for a short period between the kharif and rabi seasons, with harvesting done between April and May. Besides rice, sesame and groundnut are grown during this period. Other major summer crops in the state are fruits and vegetables such as bananas, pumpkins, and tomatoes.
The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 37.4% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 32.5% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
