MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were steady in key markets in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra Tuesday as there was only need-based demand at higher prices, traders said. But prices are likely to rise in the coming days as mills are in no hurry to offload their sales quota for May as the quota is lower than expected, they said.

 

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as demand was need-based at higher prices, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. Prices have increased by INR 60-INR 70 per 100 kilograms after the release of the sales quota for May, which the sugar trade sees to be insufficient, he said. The government has set the all-India sugar sales quota for May at 2.25 million tonnes, 2.2% lower than the quota for April of 2.30 million tonnes and 4.3?low the 2.35 million tonnes allocated for May 2025.

 

Prices are likely to increase in the coming days as there will be demand from bulk consumers of sugar, such as ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, Gupta said. There will also be demand from states such as Rajasthan, which usually sources sugar from Maharashtra. As prices of the commodity are higher in Maharashtra, demand for the sweetener from several states has shifted to Uttar Pradesh, he added.

 

Mills in Maharashtra also held prices steady as rates have already risen significantly in the state, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. Prices are likely to rise in the coming days owing to good demand from ice-cream and soft drink manufacturers in the peak summer season amid low allocation of quota for the state, he said. The government has lowered the May sugar sales quota for Maharashtra by 18% from April to 666,331 tonnes.

 

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,970-INR 4,120 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,980-INR 4,130 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 4,080-INR 4,145 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,900-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

 

At 2000 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up nearly 1% at 15.44 cents per pound despite expectations of higher sugar availability.  End
