Govt announces MSP package of INR 48.86 bln for sunflower, gram farmers

NEW DELHI – Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved measures related to procurement of sunflower and gram to prevent distress sales and ensure remunerative prices for farmers. These decision have a minimum support price outlay of over INR 48.86 billion, the agriculture ministry said in a release Tuesday.
The Centre has cleared procurement of 9,023 tonnes of sunflower in Karnataka for the 2025-2026 rabi season (Oct-Mar) under the price support scheme, with a support outlay of about INR 700 million. The move is expected to support oilseed farmers facing weak market prices.
Separately, the government raised the procurement ceiling for gram in Maharashtra to 819,882 tonnes for the 2025–26 rabi season, with support value exceeding INR 48.17 billion. The procurement window has also been extended by 30 days until May 29.
The decisions are aimed at expanding procurement operations, enabling more farmers to sell produce at assured prices, and reducing pressure to offload crops below support levels, the release said. End
