NEW DELHI – Prices of spices showed mixed trends on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Tuesday, as coriander and turmeric rose while jeera extended its decline. Jeera prices continued to decline due to higher arrivals in key spot markets, while coriander rose after declining in the previous three sessions, analysts said. Turmeric prices rose, supported by tight spot availability across key spot markets, they said.

The most active May contract of TURMERIC rose 1.8% to INR 16,280 per 100 kilograms, supported by tight spot availability across key markets in Maharashtra and Telangana, Kedia advisory said in a note. Lower-than-normal arrivals during the peak season, coupled with quality deterioration due to moisture-related rhizome rot, have constrained the supply of premium double-polished varieties, the brokerage said. This is keeping sentiment firm, especially as high-grade 'salem fali' turmeric continues to command strong premiums nearing INR 20,000 per 100 kg in major trading hubs.

The most active June contract of JEERA fell 0.4% to INR 20,180 per 100 kg, primarily pressured by a surge in fresh crop arrivals from key Rajasthan hubs, analysts at Kedia brokerage said. Favourable weather conditions enabled faster harvesting across northwest India, resulting in a sudden supply spike rather than a gradual inflow, they said. "Farmers are actively offloading stocks to generate liquidity ahead of the kharif sowing season, maintaining consistent selling pressure," they said.

A fall in export demand is also weighing down on prices, SMC Securities said. "Export competitiveness continues to be challenged by elevated freight costs, driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which is expected to keep prices under pressure in the near term," they said.

The most active May contract for CORIANDER was up 1.2% to INR 12,752 per 100 kg as arrivals slowed, according to Alok Pandey, analyst at SMC Global Securities. Arrivals reduced by 31% to 40,828 tonnes during April compared to 59,398 tonnes in the same period last year, he said.
