MUMBAI – India's edible oil imports in April are estimated at a three-month high of 1.3 million tonnes, up 11% on month on higher imports of soyoil and sunflower oil, according to GGN Research. On a year-on-year basis, imports of edible oil in April are estimated to have risen 38%.
India's palm oil imports are estimated to have fallen to a four-month low of 513,000 tonnes in April, registering a 26% on-month decline. On the other hand, palm oil imports are seen 60% higher on a yearly basis.
Palm oil imports were down on month as India has imported good quantities of it in the previous few months, said Rahul Chauhan, director at IGrain India Pvt. "There are ample stocks of palmoil left, hence imports fell on a monthly basis," he said.
Soyoil imports rose 25% on month in April to 360,000 tonnes and were steady on a year-on-year basis, Rajesh Patel, managing partner at GGN Research, told Informist. "On a monthly basis, soyoil imports were at a four-month-high," he said.
Sunflower oil imports surged both on a monthly and a yearly basis. Imports rose by a whopping 121% on month in April to 433,000 tonnes and were 141% higher compared to a year ago, according to Patel. "Sunflower oil imports were at a 22-month-high," Patel said.
Since the hostilities in Iran started, edible oil prices have risen, driven by a combination of the war leading to higher global crude oil prices, rising freight costs, and a slowdown in import shipments, raising concerns among traders, processors, and consumers ahead of the summer demand, Indrajit Paul, head of research at Agrocorp International, said. But in April, international prices cooled momentarily, which could have led to higher buying, market participants said. End
