MUMBAI – Prices of chana showed mixed trends, while prices of tur and urad were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices fell in some markets due to sluggish demand, while they were steady in others as low demand was in line with with low supply, they said. Tur prices temporarily stabilised after their downtrend, while urad prices were unchanged due to lack of new cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 5,700-INR 5,725 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices were unchanged as demand and supply of the legume were both low, he said. Arrivals of the rabi crop have slowed down as most farmers have sold their crop to the government, which is procuring the legume at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, which is higher than the prices prevailing in the market, he said.

Demand is also sluggish due to a seasonal slowdown in consumption, Kedia said. "We had thought there would at least be some demand in the first few days of May since that is when millers and traders fill up their stocks for the month ahead, but that is yet to happen," he said. "If this demand does not arise this week, then it will be safe to say that millers and traders are only relying on their stocks, and demand will remain sluggish for the rest of the month," he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 25 per 100 kg from Monday to INR 5,550-INR 5,575 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola were unchanged at INR 7,700-INR 7,725 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Prices are currently stable in the lower range, he said. "There is a downtrend in tur prices, but it isn't a continuous downtrend – prices fall a bit every few days," he said. A slowdown in consumption of pulses during summer is weighing on demand, he said. While arrivals have declined considerably from last month, they are still ongoing, he said.

Procurement of tur in Maharashtra has not picked up as much as that of chana, he said. Many farmers are currently holding mostly low-quality stocks, with most of them having already sold their better-quality crop in the market. "Farmers don't want to sell low-quality crop to the government because they know most of them will be turned away," he said. Market activity in general has slowed down as most of the good-quality crop was already traded during the peak arrival period, and most buyers are not interested in the lower quality tur that is left over, he said. Prices are expected to fall further to INR 7,500 per 100 kg in the near term, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,900-INR 7,800 per 100 kg, according to the association.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were unchanged at INR 8,325-INR 8,350 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 7,400-INR 8,400 per 100 kg, they said. Prices are steady amid lack of fresh cues, they said.

Urad prices are expected to remain under pressure amid weak demand and ample supply, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. A seasonal slowdown in consumption and lower purchases by hotels, restaurants, and caterers are weighing on prices, it said. Traders and millers are only making limited purchases to meet their immediate needs, it said. Arrivals of the domestic crop and imports from Myanmar are ongoing, it said. Myanmar still holds large stocks, and falling cost and freight rates of imports from Brazil could force the former to reduce its import prices as well, it said. New crop shipments from Brazil are expected to begin from July.  End
