MUMBAI – The government's stocks of pulses have climbed to 2.69 million tonnes, nearing the buffer target of 2.8 million tonnes, IGrain India, an agri-commodity research centre, said on Tuesday. Government agencies National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd. and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. collectively hold these buffer stocks, it said.

Chana stocks with the central nodal agencies stand at 1.1 million tonnes, accounting for the highest share of the total stocks at nearly 41%. Stocks of tur with the government are the second-largest among all pulses at 750,000 tonnes, IGrain said. Moong stocks have risen to 400,000 tonnes, while that of masur is 360,000 tonnes. The buffer of urad is the lowest, with only 33,402 tonnes in stock so far, it said.

These buffer stocks with the government are built through procurement under the price support scheme. The government is procuring chana at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, tur at INR 8,000 per 100 kg, moong at INR 8,768 per 100 kg, masur at INR 7,000 per 100 kg, and urad at INR 7,800 per 100 kg.  End
