MUMBAI – Member of the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra Dhananjay Munde has written to Minister of Marketing for Maharashtra Jayakumar Rawal to extend the deadline for chana procurement in the state till May 15. This comes as procurement in the state was halted prematurely due to the closure of the procurement portal earlier than advised by the Centre and the state government, Munde wrote in a letter to Rawal last week.
"The central and state governments had issued instructions through the administration to continue the procurement of chana (gram) at government rates by the Maharashtra State Marketing Federation – NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd.) until Apr. 29; however, the said minimum support price procurement portal was closed on Apr. 24 itself," Munde wrote in the letter. To make up for the abrupt early end of the procurement, Munde requested the state's marketing minister to extend the deadline for chana procurement across the state's centres to May 15.
On Feb. 25, the Centre had approved the procurement of 761,250 tonnes of chana in Maharashtra under the price support scheme for the rabi marketing season 2026-27 (Oct-Sept). The government is purchasing the legume at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg. Maharashtra is the largest producer of chana in the country. End
