NEW DELHI – The area sown under summer crops across India rose 3.3% on year to 8.16 million hectares as of Friday, according to agriculture ministry data. However, the area under rice, the largest summer crop, was 3.11 million hectares, down 4.2% from 3.24 million hectares a year ago.
The normal acreage during the summer crop season is 7.54 million hectares, as per the average of the area covered in the past two years. Summer crops are cultivated in India between the rabi and kharif seasons, typically from March to June.
The total area sown under pulses was 2.35 million hectares, up 3.2% from 2.28 million hectares a year ago. Moong acreage was largely flat at 1.90 million hectares, unchanged from a year ago.
The area sown under coarse cereals rose 12.4% on year to 1.60 million hectares, the data showed. The acreage under maize, the leading summer coarse cereal in terms of area and production, rose 17.6% to 1.00 million hectares from 850,000 hectares a year ago. The area under bajra was 540,000 hectares, up from 520,000 hectares at the same time last year.
The total area under oilseeds rose 15.2% on year to 1.10 million hectares as of Friday, the data showed. The area under groundnut was up 31.2% on year at 551,000 hectares, and that under sesame was up 2.2% at 507,000 hectares.
