MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra rose Monday as the sales quota for May is low, traders said. Prices are likely to increase further this month as mills are not in a hurry to offload stocks at the moment, they said.
Mills in Maharashtra raised prices by INR 50 per 100 kilograms as there is good demand from stockists amid a lower sales quota, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to rise in the coming days owing to good demand from ice-cream and soft drink manufacturers in the peak summer month of May, he said.
The government has set the sugar sales quota for May at 2.25 million tonnes, 2.2% lower than the 2.30 million tonnes in April and 4.3% below the 2.35 million tonnes allocated in May 2025.
In Uttar Pradesh, prices rose INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg as there was demand from states such as Rajasthan, which usually sources sugar from Maharashtra. But this time, due to higher prices in Maharashtra, demand for the sweetener from several states has diverted to Uttar Pradesh, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Up INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,970-INR 4,120 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,980-INR 4,130 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 50 at INR 4,080-INR 4,145 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Up INR 50 at INR 3,900-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1716 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.5% at 15.04 cents per pound, tracking a rise in the price of crude oil on NYMEX. Higher crude oil prices increase the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, decreasing the availability of sugar. End
