NEW DELHI – Prices of spices showed mixed trends on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Monday, with jeera and coriander down and turmeric rising after falling for five sessions, analysts said. Jeera prices declined due to higher arrivals in key spot markets, while coriander was weighed down by sluggish demand amid the prevailing high prices, they said. Turmeric prices rose slightly as buyers stepped in at lower prices, they said.

At 1437 IST, the most active June contract of JEERA fell 2.1% to INR 20,265 per 100 kilograms, driven by increasing arrivals in spot markets amid subdued export demand, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. The weekly average arrivals at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee centres across the country have increased by around 16% on year to 14,995 tonnes, they said. A fall in export demand is also weighing down on prices, they said. "Export competitiveness continues to be challenged by elevated freight costs, driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which is expected to keep prices under pressure in the near term," they said.

However, a steep fall in prices is unlikely due to growing concerns about crop damage and the tightening of availability of high-quality crops, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Recent thunderstorms and hailstorms in Rajasthan have damaged the standing jeera crop at the harvest stage, raising fears of reduced "A-grade" output, Kedia Advisory said. Additionally, unseasonal rains across northwest India are delaying the drying and processing of the crop, it said.

The most active May contract of TURMERIC rose 0.4% to INR 15,990 per 100 kg at 1437 IST after falling for five straight sessions. Turmeric prices had been falling due to stock offloading by farmers and traders. "Accelerated farmer selling to meet liquidity needs for upcoming kharif sowing has created a temporary supply glut, further pressuring prices," SMC Global said.

Prices are also up, as arrivals in parts of Maharashtra and Telangana remain below seasonal norms, indicating a tighter supply backdrop. "There are also concerns about the quality of the new crop, which includes rhizome rot in low-lying areas, which is reducing the availability of the premium 'double polished' varieties," the brokerage said.

At 1437 IST, the most active May contract of CORIANDER was down 1.5% to INR 12,522 per 100 kg as buying interest remained low amid higher price levels, SMC Global said. However, the fall in prices is likely to be limited as underlying fundamentals remain supportive, helped by negligible carryover and reduced global availability due to significant crop losses, the brokerage said.
