MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar rose in the key markets of Maharashtra as the quota for May is low and mills are not in a hurry to offload stocks at the moment, traders said. Mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices as they anticipate good demand from ice-cream and cold beverage manufacturers in May, the traders said.
Mills in Maharashtra raised prices by INR 30 per 100 kg as mills are not in a hurry to sell stocks due to a lower sales quota, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. The government has set the sugar sales quota for May at 2.25 million tonnes, 2.2% lower than the 2.30 million tonnes in April and 4.3% below the 2.35 million tonnes allocated in May 2025.
In Uttar Pradesh, mills raised prices by INR 15 per 100 kg as traders stocked up on the sweetener due to concerns about lower availability of sugar in May after the sales quota for the month was announced, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. There will also be demand from rural India, as marriages take place during the harvest period. Traders said the allocated quantity might not be sufficient to meet demand next month.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Up INR 15 at INR 3,955-INR 4,075 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 15 at INR 3,970-INR 4,085 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 30 at INR 3,995-INR 4,058 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Up INR 30 at INR 4,060-INR 4,085 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
