MUMBAI – The area covered under rabi crops in Telangana progressed to 9.22 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up 16% from 7.95 million acres sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The acreage so far in the state has surpassed the season's normal of 6.88 million acres.

Paddy acreage was up at 6.54 million acres from 5.94 million acres a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage in the state rose to 1.64 million acres from 911,932 acres last year, and that of jowar was up at 403,400 acres from 365,538 acres a year ago.

The acreage under chana in the state fell to 216,149 acres from 222,730 acres last year, according to the report. The area sown under urad was down at 40,233 acres from 56,271 acres a year ago, and that of moong also slipped to 11,900 acres from 13,346 acres last year. The total area sown under all rabi pulses was 281,673 acres, down from 310,521 acres a year ago.

The total acreage under all oilseeds so far was down at 272,439 acres from 315,643 acres covered in the previous year, the report showed. The area sown under groundnut fell to 201,449 acres from 251,115 acres last year. Sesame acreage was also down at 27,007 acres from 31,404 acres a year ago.

The acreage under sugarcane rose to 19,113 acres from 17,002 acres a year ago, according to the report. The area sown under tobacco was down at 11,049 acres from 19,088 acres last year.

Farmers in the state have begun harvesting rabi crops, the report said. The harvest of rabi groundnut, chana, and moong sown so far is nearly completed, it said. Around 86% of the area sown so far under sesame has been harvested, while around 85% of that under urad has been harvested. Around 65% of the acreage under maize, 60% of the acreage under jowar, and 45% of acreage under rice so far has been harvested, it said.

During the northeast monsoon, which spans from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, the state received 189.6 millimetres of rainfall, 72% above normal for the period. From Jan. 1 to Feb. 28, which is termed as winter rainfall, the state recorded a 48% deficit in rainfall, the report said. In March, rainfall in the state was 6% below normal at 12 millimetres. In April so far, the state has recorded 6.1 millimetres of precipitation, which is 64% below normal, it said. "The good rainfall received across the state is expected to facilitate favourable soil moisture conditions, leading to improved crop coverage during the current Yasangi (rabi) season," it said.

The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 400.65 billion cubic metres as of Wednesday, compared with 367.0 billion cubic metres a year ago, according to the report.  End
