MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were steady in key markets in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, traders said. Prices are likely to increase in the coming days as demand is expected to be firmer in May, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept sugar prices steady after having increased them a day earlier by INR 30-INR 40 per 100 kilograms as traders stocked up amid concern about lower availability of sugar in May after the release of the sales quota for the month, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. Prices were steady as mills decided to wait for demand to pick up further at the existing price levels, Gupta said.

The government has set the sugar sales quota for May at 2.25 million tonnes, 2.2% lower than the 2.30 million tonnes in April and 4.3?low the 2.35 million tonnes allocated in May 2025.

Mills in Maharashtra also kept prices steady after having increased them the previous day, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to rise in the coming days owing to good demand from ice-cream and soft drink manufacturers in May, which is a peak summer month, he said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,940-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,950-INR 4,070 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,995-INR 4,058 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,695-INR 3,825 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 2013 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up nearly 3% at 14.62 cents per pound, tracking a rise in the price of crude oil on NYMEX. Higher crude oil prices increase the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, decreasing the availability of sugar.  End
