MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and rice were steady, while those of maize showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of wheat were unchanged as demand for the staple grain was on a par with its supply, they said. Maize prices rose in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, as arrivals remained slow amid a rise in demand, they said. Rice prices were steady due to low market activity, they said.

WHEAT prices in Indore were steady at INR 2,610 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices are unchanged amid some demand for the staple grain while arrivals remain low, he said. Hot weather in the region is deterring many farmers from making the trip to the spot markets, as many have to travel long distances and remain in the open-air markets for most of the day to sell their crop, he said. Temperatures have remained above 40 degrees Celsius in many parts of the state for the last few days. The India Meteorological Department has warned of heatwave conditions in pockets across the state for the next few days, advising people to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Arrivals have also slowed down as a part of the crop is being purchased by the government, Kochar said. "Procurement is going on, but it is lower than last year," he said. As of Sunday, wheat procurement in Madhya Pradesh was 1.66 million tonnes, down 73% on year, according to data from the Food Corp. of India. Unseasonal rainfall during the second half of March and the first week of April delayed the harvest of the rabi crop and impacted its quality, which subsequently led to a delay in procurement. Though the government last week increased the procurement target for wheat in Madhya Pradesh to 10 million tonnes from 7.8 million tonnes, it has not affected spot market prices, he said.

Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,300-INR 2,425 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals rose by 15,000 bags to 80,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices were unchanged as demand is on par with supply, he said. Traders and millers are buying only as much as they can sell, he said. Prices are also supported by the government's ongoing procurement, he said.

Prices of wheat in Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices are supported by the government's purchases of the grain, though demand remains tepid amid comfortable supplies, he said.

The price of MAIZE in Indore rose by INR 25 per 100 kg from Tuesday to INR 2,075 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices have risen as arrivals remain sluggish amid a rise in demand, he said. Arrivals fell as many farmers stayed away from markets due to the hot weather, while demand rose amid expectations of a fall in acreage in the upcoming kharif season, he said. 

Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,750-INR 1,900 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were also steady at 2,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. 

Prices of RICE varieties remained steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of 1401 basmati rice and 1121 basmati rice were unchanged at INR 9,700-INR 9,800 per 100 kg and INR 10,000-INR 10,200 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices are unchanged amid tepid market activity, he said. Many market participants are staying away due to the hot weather, while some have returned to their hometowns due to the ongoing assembly elections in some states, he said.  End
