NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of jeera and coriander rose Tuesday on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange due to renewed buying at lower price levels, while turmeric ended flat. Coriander contract snapped a three-day losing streak after falling to a two-week low on Monday.
The most active May contract of JEERA was up nearly 1% at INR 20,285 per 100 kg as buying interest emerged at lower price levels. The contract had declined nearly 4% and hit an over five-month low of INR 19,965 per 100 kg on Monday amid supply pressure and weak export demand.
Farmers are actively offloading their stocks to meet liquidity requirements amid favourable harvesting conditions. "Jeera futures are expected to trade with a weak bias in the 19,740-20,440 range, weighed down by mounting supply pressure and subdued export demand," SMC Global Securities said in a note.
The most active May contract of CORIANDER was up 0.3% at INR 13,088 per 100 kg amid fresh buying interest at lower levels. On Monday, the contract declined 1.4% and hit a two-week low of INR 12,750. The contract had been declining since they hit a record high of INR 13,798 on Wednesday.
However, limited supply and firm demand in markets are likely to ensure buying interest at price corrections. "Supply at mandis declined by 29% at 12,151 tonnes, underpinning prices and sustaining a bullish undertone," SMC Global said.
The most active May contract of TURMERIC was flat at INR 16,096 per 100 kg. On Monday, turmeric prices declined nearly 2% as daily arrivals across Nizamabad, Erode, and Hingoli increased, creating a temporary supply glut, Kedia Advisory said. "Higher inflows of late-harvested, moisture-affected turmeric led to aggressive discounting, particularly for average-quality lots," it added. Brokerages expect the contract to trade with a downward bias between INR 15,596-INR 16,772 amid weak fundamentals.
The following were the prices of the most-active spices contracts at closing Tuesday:
Contract | Exchange | Unit (kg) | Price (INR) | Change (INR) |
Coriander May | NCDEX | 100 | 13,088 | 42 |
Jeera May | NCDEX | 100 | 20,285 | 195 |
Turmeric May | NCDEX | 100 | 16,096 | -4 |
