MUMBAI – Prices of grains showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country Tuesday, traders said. Wheat prices rose in some markets due to a slowdown in arrivals and the ongoing government procurement, they said, while maize prices rose due to low arrivals and higher demand, they said. Rice prices were steady, they said. 

 

WHEAT prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 40 per 100 kilograms Tuesday to INR 2,610 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices rose due to a slowdown in arrivals, he said. Some farmers are away for the ongoing wedding season, while many have chosen not to come to the market due to hot weather, he said. "Summer this year is hotter than last year and many farmers are not even stepping out in this heat, so arrivals are down," he said. Maximum temperatures in many parts of Madhya Pradesh have risen sharply in the past few days, with readings ranging from 41 to 46 degrees Celsius across the state on Monday, according to the India Meteorological Department.

 

Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,300-INR 2,425 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 5,000 bags to 6,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices are unchanged as demand for the grain is in line with supply. "There is not much movement in the market because sentiment is low," he said.

 

Prices of wheat in Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, rose by INR 100 per 100 kg to INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices have corrected from their previous lows, he said. "Prices were in the lower range for far too long, so now it has increased," he said. Prices are also supported by the government procurement, he said.

 

The price of MAIZE in Indore rose by INR 85 per 100 kg to INR 2,050 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices have risen due to a slowdown in arrivals amid higher demand, he said. Arrivals fell as many farmers stayed away from markets due to the hot weather, while demand rose amid expectations of a fall in acreage in the upcoming kharif season, he said. With a forecast of below-normal monsoon in 2026 and tight supplies of fertilisers due to the war in West Asia, many farmers are likely to shift to other crops, he said. "Maize requires more water and fertilisers, so this time farmers may choose other crops which thrive better under such difficult conditions," he said.

 

Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,750-INR 1,900 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were also steady at 2,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. 

 

Prices of RICE varieties remained steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of 1401 basmati rice and 1121 basmati rice were unchanged at INR 9,700-INR 9,800 per 100 kg and INR 10,000-INR 10,200 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices were steady as the market continued to assess the situation in West Asia. Although freight rates for basmati rice exports have increased sharply, these increases are not reflected in domestic prices due to government interventions, according to exporters. "The government is helping with costs on the exporters' side," they said. Countries in West Asia are the top destination for Indian basmati rice exports.  End
