Gujarat summer crop area up 7% on yr at 1.31 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area sown under summer crops in Gujarat reached 1.31 million hectares as of Monday, up nearly 7% from 1.23 million hectares covered in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state's agriculture department. The summer crop acreage so far has surpassed the state's normal for the season, which is the average of the last three years' area at 1.18 million hectares.
Paddy acreage in the state rose to 134,035 hectares from 128,454 hectares last year, the report showed. The area sown under bajra was also up at 349,100 hectares from 322,173 hectares a year ago, and that of maize was 7,663 hectares, up from 7,500 hectares last year.
The area sown under moong was 64,944 hectares, up from 59,299 hectares covered a year ago, according to the report. Urad acreage rose to 30,616 hectares from 30,196 hectares last year.
Groundnut acreage in the state so far was up at 68,318 hectares from 56,261 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. The area sown under sesame also rose to 140,271 hectares from 122,532 hectares a year ago.
The acreage under sugarcane was 14,139 hectares, up from 12,563 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area covered under vegetables was up at 114,952 hectares from 108,344 hectares a year ago. The area under onion, which is not included in vegetable acreage, slipped to 10,541 hectares from 10,947 hectares a year ago.
In Gujarat, summer crops are sown from February to April, and harvested in May and June. Bajra, paddy, sesame, and moong are the main crops grown in the state during the summer. End
