MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar rose slightly in the key markets of Maharashtra on Monday as most mills have exhausted the sales quota for April, traders said. Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as demand was limited, they said.

Mills in Maharashtra raised prices by INR 5 per 100 kg as most mills in the state have already offloaded the stocks of sugar and met the quota for April, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to increase in the coming days as demand will improve, he said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as there was limited demand, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Prices were also steady in the resale market, he said. Prices have already increased by INR 50-INR 60 per 100 kg this month and are unlikely to increase further, he said.

Mills are now awaiting the release of the sales quota for May depending on which the trajectory of price will change, Gupta said. The government is likely to announce the sugar sales limit for May in the next two days.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3930-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3930-INR 4,080 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 5 at INR 3,975-INR 4,058 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Up INR 5 at INR 3,675-INR 3,825 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 2035 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up 0.5% at 14.00 cents per pound, tracking gains in crude oil prices on NYMEX. Higher crude oil prices increase the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, decreasing the availability of sugar.  End

US$1 = INR 94.19
