MUMBAI – The ongoing 2025-26 (Jul-Jun) wheat season is mixed but resilient, the government said in response to media reports regarding production being hit by climatic adversities. Robust procurement data also points to good wheat production in key states, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare said Sunday in a release.
Unusually high temperatures in February exposed the wheat crop to heat stress, reducing grain filling duration and yield. Untimely rainfall and hailstorms in a few areas during the crop's maturity have also likely caused localised damage to grain quality and yield, the release said. However, the overall production outlook remains cautiously optimistic as there have been no reports of yield losses due to any disease or insect-pest in the wheat crop, it said. Additionally, the infestation of weeds was low during the crop growth stages.
A significant rise in early or timely sowing of wheat during the season also enabled much of the crop to escape the rise in heat during the grain-filling stage, the release said. The localised losses are partially offset by the rise in acreage this season, which is 600,000 hectares higher than last year, it said. The enhanced varietal replacement rate has also accelerated the adoption of high-yielding, climate-resilient, and disease-resistant varieties, which are better equipped to withstand heat and biotic stresses, limiting crop loss, it said.
The government's wheat procurement is progressing well, with arrivals in Haryana's spot markets surpassing the government's purchase target of 7.5 million tonnes. The government has already procured 5.61 million tonnes of wheat in the state as of Sunday, up 900,000 tonnes purchased during the same period last year, the release said.
The government has raised the procurement target in Madhya Pradesh to 10 million tonnes from the initial procurement goal target of 7.8 million tonnes following requests from the state government due to high production estimates, the release said. Maharashtra's wheat production for the year is pegged at 2.29 million tonnes, which indicates a steady increase over recent years, it said. As of late April, the state is seeing steady inflows, particularly from Marathwada and Vidarbha, it said.
As such, while localised weather-related impacts have been observed, the overall wheat production outlook for the season remains stable and resilient, supported by increased acreage, improved agronomic practices, and enhanced varietal adoption, the release said. End
