MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady due to need-based demand, traders said. Prices are likely to remain at the current levels for the rest of the month, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as there was limited demand, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Prices were also steady in the resale market, he said. Prices have already increased by INR 50-INR 60 this month and are unlikely to increase further, he said.
Mills are now awaiting the release of the sales quota for May depending on which the trajectory of price will change, Gupta said. Typically, the sugar market sees the highest sales in May due to rising temperatures and peak summer. The government is likely to announce the sugar sales limit for May by the last week of April.
In Maharashtra, sweetener prices were steady as demand and supply were on a par, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to be at the same level for the rest of the month, Kuvadia added.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3930-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3930-INR 4,080 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,970-INR 4,053 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,760-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1803 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up 0.7% at 13.69 cents per pound. Prices rose despite expectations of higher global sugar output. End
