NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices trading on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange closed lower on Friday. Coriander prices fell amid subdued buying interest at higher price levels, while weak export demand and rising arrivals weighed on jeera and turmeric prices.

The most active May contract of CORIANDER was down 4% at INR 12,972 per 100 kg, as demand weakened at higher price levels. The contract had been trading lower since hitting a record high of INR 13,798 on Wednesday. Coriander prices had firmed up amid tight supply and strong demand. There is a steady demand from bulk buyers such as masala-makers to build inventories amid tight supplies from stockists.

Going forward, prices are not likely to fall significantly amid tight supplies. "With a significant portion of the crop already marketed, the pace of fresh arrivals is likely to remain subdued, limiting immediate supply pressure. This, coupled with ongoing restocking demand, is expected to keep prices well-supported in the near term," SMC Global Securities said in a note.

The most active May contract of JEERA was down 1.5% at INR 20,860 per 100 kg as rising supplies and weak export demand pressured prices. "Export competitiveness continues to be challenged by elevated freight costs amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which may keep pressure on prices," SMC Global said. On supplies, the brokerage said the weekly average arrivals were up 15% on year at 22,992 tonnes.

The most active May contract of TURMERIC was down 0.5% at INR 16,398 per 100 kg, amid rising supplies and subdued export demand. "Supplies across mandis witnessed a sharp surge of nearly 84% year-on-year to 23,461 tonnes versus 12,754 tonnes in the corresponding period last year, highlighting persistent supply-side pressure across key mandis," SMC Global said.

If the contract fails to sustain above the support of INR 16,400, it may slip to INR 16,070. However, if it holds those key support levels, it can rise to INR 16,870, SMC Global said.
