India's March crude steel output up 9% on year, says World Steel Association

MUMBAI – Production of crude steel in India, the second largest producing country after China, rose 9.4% on year to 15.3 million tonnes in March, according to data from the World Steel Association. India accounted for nearly 10% of global steel output in the month. Global crude steel output in March fell 4.2% on year to 159.9 million tonnes.
Among the top 10 steel producers, India, the US, South Korea, Turkey, Germany, and Vietnam reported an on-year rise in output while China, Japan, Russia, and Brazil reported a fall. China, the world's largest steel producer, reported an output of 87.0 million tonnes in March, down a little more than 6% on year, but had a hefty share of 54% of global production.
In March, the US produced 7.2 million tonnes of crude steel, up 5.2% on year, whereas Japan produced 6.9 million tonnes, down 4.1%. South Korea's production was largely steady at 5.4 million tonnes but Russia's production was 11.4% down on year at 5.4 million tonnes.
The data reflects crude steel production of 69 countries reporting to the World Steel Association, and accounted for nearly 98% of world crude steel production in 2025. End
