MUMBAI – The Centre has increased the wheat procurement target in Madhya Pradesh for the rabi marketing season 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) to 10 million tonnes from the previously sanctioned amount of 7.8 million tonnes, the state's Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said in a post on social media platform X on Thursday. The decision comes after the state government requested the Centre to increase the procurement quota amid a rise in wheat production in Madhya Pradesh, he said.

 

The government stands firmly with farmers amid the current global challenges, Yadav said in the post. Wheat procurement will be carried out in a phased manner, with the government purchasing the crop from smaller farmers first, followed by medium-sized farmers, and later from farmers with larger crops, the minister said. The government is purchasing the grain at the minimum support price of INR 2,585 per 100 kg.

 

On Mar. 7, the government had set a wheat procurement target of 30.3 million tonnes for the ongoing rabi marketing season after cutting the estimates submitted by the states. Major wheat-growing states Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh had proposed higher procurement, but the Centre "realistically corrected" these targets after assessing the production and market dynamics, a government official had told Informist on Mar. 11.

 

Madhya Pradesh had proposed to procure 8.0 million tonnes of wheat, but the Centre fixed the target at 7.8 million tonnes. The official had told Informist that the government could revise the targets upwards if arrivals are strong and the pace of procurement is better than expected.

 

Last year, the wheat procurement target was revised upwards to 33.27 million tonnes, from the initial aim of 31.27 million tonnes. Against this, the government bought 30.1 million tonnes of wheat from farmers. The government has missed its wheat procurement target for the past three years.

 

Wheat production in 2025–26 (Jul-Jun) is estimated at 120.2 million tonnes, up from 115.4 million tonnes in the previous year, according to the second advance estimate. Madhya Pradesh is the second-largest wheat producing state in the country.  End
