NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of coriander eased Thursday on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange after hitting a record high in the previous session. While turmeric prices rose slightly amid lower-level buying, the jeera contract closed largely flat on the domestic bourse.

The most active May contract of CORIANDER was down 1% at INR 13,500 per 100 kg after hitting a record high of INR 13,798 in the previous session. Coriander prices had firmed up amid tight supplies and strong demand. There is a steady demand from bulk buyers such as masala-makers to build inventories amid tight supplies from stockists.

According to SMC Global Securities, the contract is expected to remain firm while facing resistance around the INR 13,800 level. A large portion of the crop has already been sold and the pace of fresh arrivals is expected to be limited, it said.

The most active May contract of TURMERIC was up 2% at INR 16,456 per 100 kg after falling for three sessions in a row. Turmeric prices had been under pressure amid stock offloading by farmers and traders.

"Turmeric had dropped amid increased offloading of stock by farmers to secure funds for the upcoming kharif season. Profit booking by stockists who accumulated inventory at lower levels in March also added pressure," Kedia Advisory said in a note.

The contract is likely to trade in a narrow band of INR 15,710–INR 16,510 in early sessions, reflecting an indecisive market stance, it added.

The most active May contract of JEERA was largely flat at INR 21,170 per 100 kg. The contract had been on a losing streak for the previous three sessions amid rising arrivals and weak export demand.

"Some selling pressure also came from weak export performance and cautious buying in the spot market. That said, the overall fundamentals remain supportive," Kedia Advisory said in a note. Weather disruptions such as intense heat in Gujarat had affected grain quality, while hailstorms in Rajasthan damaged crops at the harvest stage, lending support to better-grade crops, it said.
