MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and maize showed mixed trends, while prices of rice were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. The price of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose owing to a rise in demand amid low arrivals, they said. The price of maize also rose in Indore as reports of a push for higher ethanol blending increased demand for the coarse grain, they said. Rice prices were unchanged amid limited domestic demand and tight supplies, they said.

 

WHEAT prices in Indore rose by INR 20 per 100 kg from Wednesday to INR 2,570 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. Prices have risen because of a slowdown in arrivals amid a rise in demand, he said. Many farmers are away from the markets because of the wedding season, he said. Some are also choosing to sell their crop to the government, keeping arrivals in the markets down, he added.

 

Demand from millers and stockists has increased because there is increased demand for cleaned wheat, Kochar said. Many millers process the grain to clean it and make it more saleable to traders and stockists, he said. This year, unseasonal rainfall affected the rabi crop, causing crop loss, damage, and dirtying the standing crop, he said.

 

Demand from stockists typically increases by the first or second week of April, Kochar said. However, unseasonal rainfall also delayed harvest of the rabi crop this year, putting off stockists' purchases, he said. Prices are expected to increase by INR 100 per 100 kg as demand is likely to remain firm, he said.

 

Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,355-INR 2,410 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals were also steady at 70,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices are unchanged amid some need-based demand for the staple grain, he said. "Traders are buying only as much as they can sell," he said. Prices are likely to remain range-bound in the near term amid limited demand and the government's ongoing procurement, he said. "Wheat procurement in Rajasthan will go on till May 31," he said.

 

The price of wheat in Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, was also steady at INR 2,600 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a local trader.

 

The price of MAIZE in Indore rose by INR 40 per 100 kg from the previous day to INR 1,965 per 100 kg, Kochar said. The price has risen amid reports of a push for higher ethanol blending, he said. Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has pushed for a strong initiative towards achieving 100% ethanol fuel usage in the country in the near future, according to several media reports. Gadkari's statement comes amid reports that the government is likely to notify draft rules for the rollout of E85 fuel soon, which is petrol blended with 85% ethanol. "There is a rise in demand for maize because of these announcements," Kochar said. Maize, along with other crops such as sugarcane, is used to produce ethanol.

 

Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,750-INR 1,850 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 1,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

 

Prices of RICE varieties remained steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of 1401 basmati rice were unchanged at INR 9,700-INR 9,800 per 100 kg, and of 1121 basmati rice at INR 10,000-INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. Prices are unchanged amid some domestic demand and tight supplies, he said. The market is monitoring the situation in West Asia for more cues, he said. Countries in West Asia are the top destinations for Indian basmati rice exports.  End
