NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of coriander hit a record high on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Wednesday amid tight supplies and firm demand. Although analysts expect coriander prices to correct, they expect prices to remain high as stockists are holding back supplies. Coriander had last traded around INR 13,500 per 100 kg in June 2015.

The most active May contract of CORIANDER closed largely flat at INR 13,620 per 100 kg after hitting a record high of INR 13,798 earlier in the day. The contract has been rising for the past four sessions. "The contract is expected to float elevated with expected correction as prices are at higher levels," SMC Global Securities Ltd. said. Stockists are holding back supplies in physical markets, supporting prices and sustaining bullish sentiment in the near term, the brokerage added.

A large portion of the crop has already been sold and the pace of fresh arrivals is expected to remain limited, it said. Though tight supplies are supporting prices, buying interest is likely to taper down at higher prices.

The most active May contract of JEERA was down nearly 2% at INR 21,170 per 100 kg, weighed down by rising supplies and weak export demand. The contract closed lower for the third consecutive session. "Export competitiveness continues to be challenged by elevated freight costs amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East (West Asia), which may keep pressure on prices," SMC Global said in a note.

The most active May contract of TURMERIC was down 0.2% at INR 16,140 per 100 kg. "The contract is expected to trade in a sideways range of (INR) 15770–16570 in the near term, awaiting a decisive breakout on either side," SMC Global said.

Market sentiment "remains slightly pressured" amid rising supplies and subdued export demand, the brokerage said. Notably, weekly arrivals across agricultural produce market committees have surged by nearly 192% to 28,574 tonnes, indicating ample availability in the physical market, it added.
