MUMBAI – Prices of chana and urad were steady Wednesday while prices of tur rose in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Tur prices rose due to slowdown in arrivals as farmers refused to sell their crop at the prevailing market rates, they said. Chana prices were unchanged amid stable demand, and urad prices were steady due to low market activity, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,500-INR 5,625 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices are unchanged amid stable demand for the legume, he said. Prices are also supported by the government's ongoing procurement in Madhya Pradesh, he said. Though procurement was off to a slow start in the state, it has picked up pace in the last few days, he said.

Earlier, the government had opened up only a few centres in the state to procure the legume, and it was rejecting some of the crop as it had been affected by unseasonal rainfall in March, Kochar said. However, the impact was minimal, and with most of the crop drying, government purchases have increased in the state, though it is not as robust as the ongoing procurement in Maharashtra, he said. "Chana procurement is likely to have reached 1 million tonnes across the country by now," he said. Many farmers in the country are selling their crop to the government as the latter is purchasing the legume at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, which is higher than the prevailing market prices.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,475-INR 5,525 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 100 from Tuesday to INR 7,875-INR 7,900 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices have risen due to a slowdown in arrivals amid a slight rise in demand, he said. Arrivals have declined because many farmers are refusing to sell their crop as prices in various markets have fallen below the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg. Tur procurement in Maharashtra has picked up pace as some farmers are preferring to sell their crop to the government, leading to a further decline in arrivals, he said.

Though arrivals are likely to remain low in the near term, a further rise in prices is unlikely, Kedia said. "Prices may remain range-bound, fluctuating by INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg because demand won't see any major spikes at least till June at least," he said. The demand for tur dal, or processed tur, remains low during summer due to a decline in consumption, he said. Many mills also remain largely shut during May as temperatures in the interior parts of Maharashtra rise above 40 degrees Celsius, prompting many to stay indoors, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 100 from the previous day to INR 8,000-INR 8,100 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were unchanged at INR 8,200 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 7,600-INR 8,600 per 100 kg, they said. Prices are steady due to low market activity, they said.

Though imports of urad are currently on, it is unlikely to weigh on prices of domestic tur in the near term, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. Prices of domestic urad are cheaper than imports from Myanmar, making the former more preferable to buyers, the association said. However, the cost and freight rates of imports from Brazil are declining, and this could force Myanmar's urad exporters to reduce their prices as well in the medium term, it said.  End
