MUMBAI – Prices of wheat showed a mixed trends Wednesday while prices of maize and rice were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices rose in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, as arrivals remained low and demand increased, they said. Prices of maize were unchanged amid some demand for the grain and rice prices were steady as the market awaited more cues from the ongoing developments in West Asia.
WHEAT prices in Indore rose by INR 20 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,550 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices have risen for the second consecutive day amid low arrivals and rise in demand, he said. Many farmers are still away from markets due to the ongoing wedding season, he said. Meanwhile, demand from millers has increased as many buyers are looking for machine-cleaned wheat, he said. A portion of the new rabi crop has been impacted due to the unseasonal rainfall in March and the first week of April. While there are reports of crop loss and damage, some of the crop has also been dirtied, he said. As such, demand for cleaned wheat has increased, prompting millers to stock up on the grain so that they can clean it up and sell it to traders, stockists, and other buyers, he said.
Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,355-INR 2,410 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals rose by 25,000 bags to 70,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices are unchanged as the rise in arrivals is matched by a rise in demand, he said. Demand from millers has increased slightly, but it is not substantial enough to push prices up, he said.
Though prices had risen slightly a day after the government's decision to allow additional wheat exports, market sentiment has waned as many participants don't see export demand rising anytime soon, Mehta said. Most participants are questioning its relevance even as the earlier quota remains unutilised due to lack of export price parity, but some said the move would be beneficial if geopolitical and climatic conditions improve export competitiveness.
On Monday, the Centre raised the wheat export quota to 5.0 million tonnes. In February, the government reopened wheat exports after a nearly four-year ban and announced an export quota of 2.5 million tonnes, citing ample stocks in the central pool.
Prices of wheat in Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, were also steady at INR 2,600 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a local trader.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady at INR 1,925 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are unchanged amid some demand for the coarse grain, he said. While arrivals of the grain are still on the lower side as many farmers are away, it is enough to meet the ongoing demand, keeping prices steady, he said.
Prices of maize in Davangere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,750-INR 1,850 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 1,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.
Prices of RICE varieties also remained steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of 1401 basmati rice were unchanged at INR 9,700-INR 9,800 per 100 kg, and of 1121 basmati rice at INR 10,000-INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. The price of 1509 basmati rice was steady at INR 8,500 per 100 kg, he said. The market is monitoring the developments in West Asia for more cues, they said. Prices could rise in the near term as the US has extended the ceasefire in the region, but the absence of peace talks between the US and Iran and no proper reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has kept the outlook of Indian basmati rice exports in limbo, he said. Countries in West Asia are the top destinations for Indian basmati rice. End
