MUMBAI – Prices of chana showed mixed trends, while prices of tur and urad were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices fell in some markets due to a seasonal slowdown in demand, while they were steady in others due to a decline in arrivals, they said. Tur prices were steady as low demand matched low supply, while urad prices were unchanged amid low market activity, they said.

CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 5,675-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices are steady amid some need-based demand from millers and traders. Demand has been largely tepid due to a seasonal slowdown in consumption of pulses during summer, he said. However, a slowdown in arrivals has prevented a fall in prices, he said. "Most of the new rabi crop is being sold to NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd.) this year, so there are very minimal arrivals in the market," he said.

The government is procuring chana at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, which is higher than the prevailing prices in spot markets. This is prompting more farmers to sell their crop to the government, he said. "The government has extended the period for farmer registrations for procurement till Apr. 30 now, so they (the government) may extend the period of procurement in the state as well," he said. The government has sanctioned the procurement of 761,250 tonnes of chana in Maharashtra, and it is likely to meet the target this year, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 5,475-INR 5,525 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola were steady at INR 7,725-INR 7,750 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Prices were unchanged as demand and supply were both low and equally matched, he said. While demand is low amid a seasonal slowdown in consumption, arrivals have decreased as farmers are refusing to offload their stocks at the prevailing prices, he said. "Last week there were 10-15 trucks arriving in the market every day, but this week there have been only three to four trucks daily," he said.

Prices of tur had been on a staggered downtrend last week due to sluggish demand, dipping below the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg in many spot markets, Kedia said. "Most farmers won't sell their crop unless prices rise by INR 400 per 100 kg at least, putting market prices above the minimum support level," he said. Arrivals have also decreased as some farmers are now selling their crop to the government, as the latter is purchasing it at the minimum support price. "Earlier tur procurement was not going too well as market prices were the same or higher than the minimum support price but now with the downtrend, some farmers are turning to the government now," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,900-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were unchanged at INR 8,200 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 7,600-INR 8,600 per 100 kg, they said. Prices are steady due to tepid market activity, they said.

Urad prices are expected to fall in the near term due to a seasonal slowdown in consumption and comfortable supply, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. Demand from hotels, restaurants, and caterers has also declined due to a shortage of gas, it said. Arrivals of the rabi crop are currently on, and the summer crop sowing is higher than last year, it said. Harvest of the summer crop in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat will begin from mid-May, adding to the supply, it said.  End
