Gujarat summer crop area up 7% on year at 1.31 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – Farmers in Gujarat have sown summer crops across 1.31 million hectares as of Monday, up over 7% from 1.23 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The area sown so far has surpassed the normal acreage for the season, which is 1.18 million hectares.
Paddy acreage in the state was up at 134,035 hectares from 128,182 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under maize also rose to 7,663 hectares from 7,472 hectares last year, and that of bajra was 349,100 hectares, up from 321,107 hectares last year.
The area sown under moong rose to 64,944 hectares from 59,113 hectares last year, according to the report. The acreage under urad was also up at 30,616 hectares from 30,196 hectares a year ago.
The acreage under groundnut so far was 68,318 hectares, up from 56,261 hectares covered in the previous year, the report showed. Sesame acreage also rose to 140,271 hectares from 122,469 hectares last year.
Sugarcane acreage in the state was up at 14,139 hectares from 12,563 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under vegetables was up at 114,952 hectares from 107,247 hectares a year ago. The area under onion, which is not included in vegetable acreage, fell to 10,541 hectares from 10,944 hectares a year ago.
In Gujarat, summer crops are sown in February and March, and harvested in May and June. Bajra, paddy, sesame, and moong are the main crops grown in the state during the summer. End
