NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of turmeric and jeera closed lower on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Monday due to higher arrivals and weak export demand. Coriander prices rose on sustained buying interest at lower levels, according to analysts.
The most active May contract of JEERA was down 1.1% at INR 21,700 per 100 kilogram, as increased arrivals in key markets put a pressure on prices. "Farmers are actively selling their produce to take advantage of prevailing prices, which is keeping near-term pressure intact," Kedia Advisory said in a note.
Market sentiment was also dampened amid weak export demand, especially from China. "It has further added to the downside, leading to a build-up of domestic stocks," the brokerage added.
However, concerns over the quality are likely to offer some support for premium-quality arrivals. "Intense heatwaves in Gujarat during the final maturation stage have resulted in shrivelled grains, reducing the supply of bold-grade jeera. Outbreaks of blight disease in key Gujarat pockets have reduced the quality and quantity of the harvestable crop", Kedia said.
The most active May contract of TURMERIC was down 0.3% at INR 16,100 per 100 kg, as rising market supplies and weak export demand weighed on prices. "Weekly arrivals across mandis have surged by nearly 192% to 28,574 tonnes, reflecting ample availability in the physical market," SMC Global Securities said in a note.
However, farmers in some regions, such as Sangli, Maharashtra, and Nizamabad, Telangana, are holding back supplies in expectation of higher prices, Kedia Advisory said.
The most active May contract of CORIANDER rose 0.7% at INR 13,330 per 100 kg, supported by buying interest and tight supplies. According to SMC Global Securities, the contract is witnessing consistent purchasing interest after price corrections. However, weak export demand is likely to limit further gains, it added.
The following were the prices of the most-active spices contracts at the closing:
Contract | Exchange | Unit (kg) | Price (INR) | Change (INR) |
Coriander May | NCDEX | 100 | 13,330 | 92 |
Jeera May | NCDEX | 100 | 21,700 | -250 |
Turmeric May | NCDEX | 100 | 16,100 | -46 |
