MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and rice were unchanged and prices of maize were unavailable in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices are steady and likely to remain so in the near term amid some need-based demand and the government's procurement, they said. Rice prices are unchanged on limited domestic demand amid tight supplies, they said. Maize prices were unavailable as some markets were shut for Akshaya Tritiya, they said.

WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were unchanged at INR 2,325-INR 2,370 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 40,000 bags to 80,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices were steady amid some need-based demand from flour millers, he said. "There are mostly low quality arrivals in the market now as the majority of the best quality and average quality wheat is being procured by the government," he said.

Though the government's purchases of the staple grain in Rajasthan were off to a slow start, they have increased in the past few days as the government relaxed quality standards, Mehta said. "More farmers are eligible to sell their crop to the government now, even semi-lustre wheat is sold there (to the government)," he said. As such, most of the arrivals in the market are of lower quality, which are being purchased by flour millers, he said. "Flour millers typically do not have any problem with low-quality wheat as they have to process it anyway," he said.

Prices are expected to remain largely steady in the near term amid limited demand and some support from the government's procurement of the staple grain, Mehta said.

The price of wheat in Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, was also steady at INR 2,600 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a local trader. The price was unchanged amid tepid market activity, he said. "Both demand and arrivals are slow," he said. Most farmers are discouraged by the prevailing market prices and a delay in the government's procurement of the grain, he said. "Most of them (farmers) are unlikely to sell their crop till prices rise to a higher range," he said. A pick-up in the pace of the government's wheat purchases could also prompt farmers to offload their stocks, he said.

Prices of RICE varieties also remained steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of 1401 basmati rice were unchanged at INR 9,700-INR 9,800 per 100 kg, and of 1121 basmati rice at INR 10,000-INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. The price of 1509 basmati rice was steady at INR 8,500 per 100 kg, he said. Prices are unchanged amid limited domestic demand amid tight supplies, he said. The market is currently monitoring the ongoing developments in West Asia for more cues, he said. Countries in that region are the top destinations for Indian basmati rice exports.

Prices of MAIZE in Davangere, Karnataka, were unavailable as the market was shut, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Prices of wheat and maize were unavailable in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, as the market was shut for Akshaya Tritiya, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Many villages are celebrating the occasion Monday as the auspicious period, which began Sunday, stretches into the next day, he said.  End
