MUMBAI – Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved the Uttar Pradesh government's proposal to procure potatoes under the market intervention scheme, according to a release by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on Saturday. Chouhan also granted a 30-day extension for the procurement of tur in Karnataka, the release said. Procurement of tur in the state will now continue till May 15, the release said.
The state government is procuring tur under the price support scheme at the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg.
Under the market intervention scheme, 2 million tonnes of potatoes will be procured in Uttar Pradesh at the market intervention price of INR 6,500.9 per 100 kg, the release said. "This will help ensure remunerative prices for potato farmers in Uttar Pradesh and provide relief from being forced to sell their produce at lower prices," according to the release.
The minister has also approved Andhra Pradesh government's proposal to procure an additional 94,500 tonnes of chana under the price support scheme. This will increase the state's chana procurement limit to 113,250 tonnes, providing "significant relief to the state's chickpea farmers, ensuring remunerative prices and preventing distress sales," the release said. The government is purchasing chana at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg. End
