Ethanol blending by oil cos at 20% in March, maintain it at 20% in Nov-Mar

MUMBAI – State-owned oil marketing companies procured 959 million litres of ethanol and blended 958 million litres under the Ethanol Blending Programme in March, achieving 20% blending in petrol, according to a report released by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell. In the 2025-26 ethanol supply year which began in November, oil companies procured 4.24 billion litres of ethanol, blended nearly 4.50 billion litres, maintaining a cumulative blending of 20%.
"Ethanol blending in petrol was 20% during March 2026, and cumulative ethanol blending during ESY (ethanol supply year) Nov 2025-Mar 2026 of 20% was achieved," according to the report. In the 2024-25 ethanol supply year, companies procured 10.40 billion litres of ethanol and blended 10.23 billion litres, achieving a cumulative blending of 19.2%.
The government has mandated state oil companies to blend ethanol with petrol to reduce dependence on crude oil imports, promote green mobility, and support the rural economy. In the first tender cycle for 2025-26, oil companies have issued orders for the supply of 10.5 billion litres of ethanol from distilleries.
The government has set a target to maintain 20% cumulative ethanol blending with petrol till October 2026, and is yet to decide on raising the blending target for the subsequent period. End
