India's March natural gas imports up 20.5% on year; FY26 down 1%

MUMBAI – India's liquefied natural gas imports rose 20.5% on year in March to 2.89 billion standard cubic metres, according to a report released by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell. Imports during the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) fell 1% to 35.34 billion standard cubic metres.

 

India's natural gas import bill rose to $1.1 billion in March from $1 billion last year. However, it declined to $13.6 billion during FY26 from $14.9 billion a year ago, the report showed.

 

The country consumed 5.73 billion standard cubic metres of LNG in March, up from 5.35 billion standard cubic metres last year. Domestic production was only 2.87 billion standard cubic metres during the month, down nearly 4% on year, the report showed. As demand outpaced production, the import dependence rose to 50.4% in March from 44.9% a year ago.

 

Natural gas consumption declined more than 2% to 69.66 billion standard cubic metres in FY26, and domestic production fell nearly 4% to about 34.78 billion standard cubic metres. Import dependency during the period rose to 50.7% from 50.1% a year ago.

 

Natural gas production fell short of the March target of 3.197 billion standard cubic metres and the FY26 target of around 36.464 billion standard cubic metres, the report showed.  End
