NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of spices rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Friday. Turmeric prices rose as arrivals were below normal, according to analysts, while increased buying interest at lower levels supported jeera and coriander prices.

The most-active May contract of TURMERIC was up 3.2% at INR 16,190 per 100 kilograms, supported by lower-than-normal arrivals of the new crop in major physical markets. Arrivals have fallen as farmers continue to hold back their produce in the expectation of better prices, Kedia Advisory said.

The brokerage said the supply outlook remains "balanced rather than excessive", as weather disruptions and crop diseases have offset some of the gains from increased planting. However, mixed export trends with strong demand largely limited to high-quality turmeric are likely to limit a further rise in prices, it added.

The most-active May contract of JEERA was up 1.5% at INR 21,950 per 100 kg amid lower-level buying and concerns over production. "Output is expected to fall by around 5% this year to 513,000 tonnes," Kedia Advisory said. "Weather risks, including heatwaves and pest attacks like aphids, continue to pose uncertainty for the final crop size," it added.

However, weak export demand and falling shipments on a monthly and cumulative basis are likely to limit the rise in prices. India's jeera exports fell 15% on year to 166,878 tonnes in Apr-Jan, according to Spices Board India data.

The most-active May contract of CORIANDER was up 3.3% at INR 13,226 per 100 kg, supported by improved buying interest at lower levels. Wednesday, the contract had hit a nearly two-week low of INR 12,554 per 100 kg owing to weak demand in domestic and overseas markets. However, weak export demand is likely to limit a further rise.
