MUMBAI – Prices of pulses showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices were steady amid limited demand and support from the government's procurement, they said. Tur prices were unchanged in some markets amid tepid activity and fell in others due to a slowdown in demand, they said. Urad prices fell tracking the fall in prices of imports, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were unchanged at INR 5,550-INR 5,600 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices have been steady due to limited demand for the legume, he said. "Prices have been fluctuating by INR 25 per 100 kg in the last few days because there is just need-based demand in the market," he said. Prices are also supported by the government's procurement of the legume, he said.
The government's procurement of chana in Madhya Pradesh is off to a slow start as some of the new rabi crop has been affected by the unseasonal rainfall in March and the first week of April, he said. "Farmers are cleaning off their dirtied crops and letting them dry out before they sell it to the government, so procurement is slow currently," he said. However, procurement is expected to be robust this year, as many farmers are choosing to sell their crop to the government, he said. The government is purchasing the legume at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, which is higher than the prevailing spot market prices. "Till now, around 900,000 tonnes of chana has been procured by central nodal agencies pan-India," he said.
Prices of chana in Delhi were unchanged at INR 5,475-INR 5,550 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 7,775-INR 7,800 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. Prices are unchanged amid tepid market activity as most participants have not stepped out due to hot weather, he said. "Trading timings in the market have reduced to just two to three hours this week because temperatures have been really high," he said. Temperatures in parts of interior Maharashtra, such as central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha, have been breaching the 40 degrees Celsius mark this week, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. Akola recorded the highest temperature in the state so far in the season at 44 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, the agency said.
Prices are likely to fall in the near term due to a seasonal slowdown in demand amid ample availability, Gupta said. Arrivals of the kharif crop are steady, while imports from Myanmar are also ongoing, he said. Prices of imports have fallen significantly, narrowing the competitive edge domestic tur had over the shipments, he said. However, a steep fall in prices of domestic tur is unlikely as prices have already slipped below the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg in many spot markets, he said.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 50 from Thursday to INR 7,900-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, fell by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 8,250 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, also fell by INR 200 to INR 7,600-INR 8,600 per 100 kg, they said. Prices fell tracking a fall in prices of imports, Kochar said. The rise in shipments of the legume is weighing on its prices, he said.
With many shipments of urad from Myanmar expected in the second half of April and the first half of May, prices are expected to remain under pressure, the association said in its weeky report on Monday. Demand is likely to remain weak, which could prompt stockists to offload their stocks in fear of a further fall in prices, it said. In the medium term, the movement in prices is expected to depend on the pace and volume of the summer crop arrivals and the cost and freight rates of imports, it said. End
