MUMBAI – Prices of wheat showed a mixed trend, while those of rice and maize were steady in key spot markets across the country, Friday, traders said. Prices of wheat rose in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, due to a rise in demand for the ongoing wedding season, they said. Prices of maize were unchanged as demand matched supply, while that of rice were steady as the market awaits more cues from the ongoing developments in West Asia, they said.

 

WHEAT prices in Indore rose by INR 60 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,510 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices have risen due to higher demand for the ongoing wedding season, he said. "Domestic demand has improved because the wedding season began this week," he said. In India, consumption of farm commodities typically increases during the two prominent wedding seasons — one which runs from October to February, and the second from April to June, he said.

 

Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,325-INR 2,370 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 120,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices are unchanged amid some need-based demand for the staple grain, he said. Traders are purchasing only as much as they can sell, he said.

 

The government's procurement of wheat is yet to provide substantial support to prices, Mehta said. The government had commenced wheat procurement in Rajasthan on Mar. 25, though it was off to a slow start due to concerns about the quality of the new rabi crop, he said. Unseasonal rains and hailstorms in the second half of March and first week of April affected the crop, leading to loss of lustre, shrivelling, and higher grain breakage. Procurement is likely to pick up in the coming weeks as the government has relaxed the quality standards so that more farmers are eligible, a government official told Informist Friday.

 

Prices of wheat in Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, were also steady at INR 2,600 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a local trader.

 

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady at INR 1,900 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are unchanged as demand is on par with the supply of the coarse grain, he said. Arrivals of the new rabi crop are on and steady demand from traders and millers looking to stock up on maize are keeping prices steady, he said. Prices are expected to be largely unchanged till May, Kochar said adding he does not anticipate any spike in demand. 

 

Prices of maize in Davangere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,750-INR 1,850 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 1,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. 

 

Prices of RICE varieties also remained steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of 1401 basmati rice were unchanged at INR 9,700-INR 9,800 per 100 kg, and of 1121 basmati rice at INR 10,000-INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. The price of 1509 basmati rice was steady at INR 8,500 per 100 kg, he said. The market is currently monitoring the ongoing developments in West Asia for more cues, he said. With a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon and hopes of further peace talks between the US and Iran this weekend, many exporters expect demand for Indian basmati rice to surge once the war ends. Countries in that region are the top destinations for Indian basmati rice.  End
