Delhi temperature tops 40 degrees, heatwave likely in next 2-3 days, says Skymet

MUMBAI – The temperature in Delhi has been rising steadily so far this week, with the mercury topping 40 degrees Celsius across many base stations in the city on Thursday. The maximum temperature in the capital city is likely to rise further, with heatwave conditions expected to develop in the next two to three days, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said.
A heat wave is typically declared when the day temperature reaches 40 degrees Celsius or more and the departure from normal is 4.5 degrees Celsius or higher, the weather agency said. Delhi has a pentad normal — or the average of temperatures calculated across five days — of 36 degrees Celsius around this time of the year, the agency said. As such, a heatwave will be declared if the maximum temperatures breach the 41 degrees Celsius mark.
The pentad normal in Delhi rises to 37–38 degrees Celsius during the last week of April. The day temperature will need to reach 42–43 degrees Celsius to qualify for heatwave conditions during that period, Skymet said.
The frequency of heatwaves in Delhi has generally been erratic during April, the agency said. The capital city last recorded heatwaves during April 2025. Before that, heatwaves were recorded during April 2022, which was the hottest in recent years, with the Safdarjung base station recording maximum temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius for 11 consecutive days. The highest ever temperature recorded during April in Delhi was 45.6 degrees Celsius in 1941. End
