Slight relief from heat, humidity in Mumbai as rains likely Sun-Wed, says Skymet

MUMBAI - Some relief is in sight for Mumbai where the maximum temperature has risen to 36 degrees Celsius in the past two days -– 3 degrees Celsius above normal -- private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. The rise in temperature, coupled with humidity in excess of 50%, has raised discomfort disproportionately high, said the weather agency, which has forecast light rainfall over the city from Sunday to Wednesday that could bring temporary relief from the prevailing hot and humid weather.
The wind pattern at the surface and in the lower levels has changed over and around Mumbai, the weather agency said. Typically, the sea breeze during the afternoon and evening is replaced by the land breeze during the night and morning hours. However, there has been a persistent sea breeze over the city and suburbs in the past three days. This has raised humidity levels and consequently the discomfort index.
A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over south Gujarat, which could change the wind stream along the Konkan coast. An anti-cyclone will be marked over the northeast Arabian Sea, off the Konkan and Goa coasts, while a seasonal peninsular India trough will remain in proximity to central Maharashtra, on the leeward side of the Western Ghats, the weather agency said. A combination of these weather systems is likely to lead to the formation of a convergence zone, causing partly cloudy skies over south Gujarat, central Maharashtra, and Konkan between Sunday and Wednesday. This could cause light rainfall over the city and suburbs during the same period, the agency said. End
